Monkey Puzzle Charlton. We have received a FairAware award

At Monkey Puzzle Charlton, we’re proud to have achieved the Fair Trade FairAware Award, recognising our commitment to helping children understand the importance of fairness, sustainability, and the world around them. Through engaging, age-appropriate activities, our nursery children have been exploring what Fairtrade means and why it matters.
Learning About Fairtrade in the Early Years
As part of the project, children discovered the Fairtrade symbol and explored a range of everyday products that carry the Fairtrade mark. Together, they identified items used both at nursery and at home, helping them make meaningful connections between their learning and the wider world.
By introducing these concepts in a fun and accessible way, we encourage children to become curious learners while developing an awareness of the communities and people behind the products they use every day.
Discovering the Journey of Fairtrade Bananas
Children also took part in a project focused on Fairtrade bananas, learning about where bananas come from and the people who grow them. They explored how choosing Fairtrade products helps farmers receive a fairer price for their work, supporting them and their families.
These activities help children build empathy, develop an understanding of fairness, and begin to appreciate how their choices can have a positive impact on others, valuable lessons that support their personal, social, and emotional development throughout their early years.
Helping Children Become Thoughtful Global Citizens
At Monkey Puzzle Charlton, we believe childcare is about much more than preparing children for school. By introducing real-world topics in an engaging way, we help children develop confidence, compassion and a growing understanding of the diverse world around them.
Experiences like our Fairtrade project encourage children to ask questions, think critically and learn about kindness and responsibility. These are important life skills that will benefit them long into the future.
What is Fairtrade?
Around the world, the people who grow, pick, and make the things we buy are facing the same challenges: unfair pay, unsafe working conditions, and a climate crisis threatening their livelihoods. Fairtrade exists to change this, and to push for the rules that make fairness the norm, not the exception.
